Instruction

John and Margaret Shafer Wilkerson's critically acclaimed Broadway, touring, regional and concert performance background, make them uniquely qualified to guide individuals to reach their maximum potential. As working actors, singers and directors, they understand the physical,  mental and emotional challenges of the performing artist. They have been privileged to work with theatre's brightest directors, choreographers and conductors including Rob Marshall, Kathleen Marshall, Michael Blakemore, Susan Schulman, Randy Skinner, James Hammerstein, Jerry Zaks, Lynne Meadow, Rob Fisher, Paul Gemignani, Al Freeman, Jr., F. Murray Abraham, Paul Sorvino, Donna McKechnie , Tony Randall, Kristin Chenoweth, Robert Goulet, Rachel York, and many, many others. Mr. Wilkerson holds a Bachelor of Music from Shenandoah Conservatory and completed his graduate work in Vocal Performance at SUNY-Fredonia. He studied acting and directing with Paul Iddings, Behrend College, Penn State.  Margaret's vocal studies have been with Fredna Grimland, Virginia Botkin (UNT faculty) , Anne Jackson, Carmel Harris (NYC), and Sylvia Syms. Her acting studies have been varied and the most edifying  experiences came by working with, and exposure to, great actors. She was a history major and sociology minor at UNT...hence, her oft-repeated refrain, "Do the research!"

Vocal Instruction will include:

       - Study of the anatomy involved in the breathing                    process
        - Concentration on proper breathing and support
        - Vocal exercises to strengthen the vocal mechanism
        - Basic sight reading
        - Preparation of songs assigned & those brought in by             the student
        - Consultation the business of the "business."

The Wilkerson's firmly believe that one needs a strong foundation in proper technique, regardless of the type of music one plans to sing. Students have different goals and gifts and all kinds of music are worthwhile. Plan to work hard, have fun, and see results

Margaret and John also offer private acting studies and coaching. There are many schools of thought on what "method/style/technique" is the best...some are complementary and some contradictory. Find what works best for you.
